Baseball: Saints down Lutes

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s used solid pitching and
timely hitting to defeat Pacific Lutheran University, 9-7, Tuesday
afternoon at Saints Field.
The Saints scored first picking up two runs in the
bottom of the first. After a single by Maki Smith and double by Nate
Baker the two came around to score on groundouts by Adam Siler and
Andrew Salinas. They added three more in the third on a bases clearing
double by Richard O’Neill to score Smith, Baker and Siler.
Pacific Lutheran picked up two runs in the fourth on
singles by Geoff Gabler and Ben Shively. They added another in the top
of the fifth only to see the Saints add two in the bottom half of the
inning. The Lutes got two more in the sixth on a two RBI single to left
center by Roger Guzman.
The Saints answered back in the bottom of the sixth
with two runs of their own. Smith led off the inning with a single to
right. Nate Baker followed with a triple to right center, picking up the
RBI. Two batters later, with the bases loaded for him again; O’Neill got
a base hit to left to score Baker.
The Lutes battled back in the seventh getting two
runs on a double by Justin Whitehall. Tip Wonhoff came in to pitch the
eighth and ninth innings for the Saints shutting down the Lute offense
facing the minimum number of batters in both innings.
O’Neill was 4-5 on the day with four RBIs while
Baker went 2-3 with a triple, double, and two walks. Smith added two
hits while Curtis Thibault, Vince Maughan, and Jacob Orosco each had
one.
Andrew Speer picked up the win for the Saints
allowing two earned runs. Jeff Caley was tagged with the loss for the
Lutes.
The Saints will face Central Washington University
in conference action this Saturday in a doubleheader at SMU.
