Baseball: Saints pick up win in final tournament game

Ellensburg, WA (March 12) – Saint Martin’s wrapped
up play at the GNAC Invitational with a 12-7 win over Central Washington
University Monday afternoon. The Saints finished 2-2 in the three day
tournament.
Saint Martin’s scored in the bottom of the first
before the Wildcats put up three in the third to take the lead. Saint
Martin’s responded in the fourth with three runs of their own. Vince
Maughan had an RBI single and Curtis Thibault added a two run single to
give the Saints the 4-3 advantage.
Central tied the game in the fifth only to see the
Saints regain the lead in the sixth. The Wildcats would tie the game one
more time in the seventh on an RBI single by Jamie Nilsen.
The Saints took the lead for good in the bottom of
the inning scoring five runs to go up 10-5. With the bases loaded and
nobody out Craig Yuhas hit a blast to right field, his second grand slam
of the year. Two batters later Thibault picked up a run on a sac bunt.
Saint Martin’s picked up two more in the eighth on a
double by Richard O’Neill and single by Andy Cole. Central also posted a
two spot in their final inning at the plate as Nilsen hit a two run home
run in the ninth.
Yuhas led all players with five RBIs going 2-3 on
the day. O’Neill was 3-4 with three runs scored and Thibault went 2-4
picking up three RBIs for the Saints. The Saints put up a total of 16
hits in the game.
Tip Wonhoff, who came in to pitch the final three
innings, picked up the win.
The Saints have a break before facing Central
Washington in conference games March 31st at Saints Field.
