Baseball: Saints drop double header to PLU

Tacoma, WA (February 4) – Saint Martin’s baseball
lost two games to Pacific Lutheran University to open their 2007 season.
The Lutes won the seven inning opener 3-2 and the second nine inning
game 7-6.
The Lutes scored the first two runs of the first
game in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Green scored on a balk and
Roger Guzman came in on a double by Logan Andrews.
The Saints put up two runs to tie it in the top of
the fifth. Vince Maughan led of with a single up the middle and Maki
Smith drew the walk. Craig Yuhas singled to load the bases. Nate Baker
hit a ball to second, Yuhas was called out on visual interference but
both runners were able to score.
With the score still tied 2-2 PLU’s Justin Whitehall
led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run to right field to
put the Lutes back on top.
Pat Capone and Tip Wonhoff combined for six innings
and gave up only five hits. The Saints however were limited to only four
hits by the pitching combo of Joe DiPietro and Brett Brunner. Wonhoff
was tagged with the loss and Brunner picked up his first win.
In the second game the Saints went up 2-1 in the top
of the fourth on a two-run double by Adam Siler to score Yuhas and
Smith.
The Lutes regained the lead in the bottom of the
fifth to take a 4-2 lead. The Saints gave up a hit and two walks to load
the bases. Ryan Thorne singled to center to drive in Green with the
tying run. Guzman scored on a bases loaded walk to Andrews and Simon
came in when Whitehall grounded out to second.
The Saints banged out four runs in the seventh.
Shane Schoeneberg started the inning off with a single through the left
side. Richard O’Neill then drew the walk. Curtis Thibault and Andy Cole
had back-to-back RBI singles. With the bases loaded Baker hit a single
through the left side to score two more runs and put the Saints up 6-4.
Down by two going into the bottom of the eighth the
Lutes started what would be a three run rally. Whitehall got the leadoff
walk followed by a Chris Bowden single. With one out Green was hit by a
pitch to load the bases. Whitehall scored on a sac fly to right field.
Still trailing by one with two outs Guzman hit a double to left center
to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs.
Andrews, the Lutes sixth pitcher of the game, picked
up the win. Scott Leshner was credited with the loss. Andrew Speer, who
started for the Saints, went four innings giving up four runs. Nick
Bolthouse gave up two runs in two plus innings.
The Saints are back in action this Friday as they
face Cal-State Monterey Bay in a four game weekend series.
