May 7, 2006

Monmouth, OR --- Saint Martin's edged Western Oregon 4-3 Sunday to snap the Wolves' GNAC-record 17-game win streak, but WOU then bounced back to beat the Saints 16-10 to earn a split of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The Wolves finished their regular-season with a record of 38-14, winning their fifth consecutive GNAC title with a conference mark of 20-4. The Saints (15-28, 7-12 GNAC) are slated to finish the season Thursday and Friday with a pair of doubleheaders against Central Washington.

SMU scored a run in each of the first three innings and held a 3-1 lead until the Wolves tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Two sacrifice flies plated two runs, but SMU answered with a run of its own in the eighth when Donnie Bradetich (Sr., Eugene, OR) singled home Richard O'Neill (So., Edmonds, WA), who had led off the inning with a base hit.

In the ninth inning, the Wolves loaded the bases, but reliever Adam Siler (Jr., Port Orchard, WA) got the final out with a 3-2 strikeout to earn his fifth save.

Saint Martin 's had 10 hits in the game, including three by Ryan Brilhante (Fr., Kailua, HI). Bradetich had two base hits and drove in two runs. Tip Wonhoff (Jr., South Bend, WA) allowed only five hits in seven innings to get the win, while Siler allowed just one hit in two innings.

In the second game, Western Oregon pounded out 16 hits. The Wolves scored five runs in the second, five runs in the fourth and six runs in the sixth inning. Vince Maughan (jr., Bellevue, WA) led the Saints with three hits and three RBI, while O'Neill added a pair of base hits.

Baseball: Saints swept by Western Oregon

Monmouth, OR --- Saint Martin’s suffered a pair of losses against Western Oregon on Saturday at the WOU Baseball Field. The Wolves won the opener 9-3 before taking an 8-2 win in the nightcap.

Western Oregon (37-13, 19-3 GNAC), which is ranked first in the West Region and seventh in the national poll, tied the WOU school record for consecutive wins, while also extending its own GNAC record.

WOU's Nick Waechter improved to 11-0 on the season in the twinbill opener setting a GNAC single-season record for victories and extending his GNAC-record winning streak to 12.

The junior righthander gave up one hit through the first six innings. SMU's (14-27, 6-11 GNAC) second hit of the game and a pair of wild pitches broke up his shutout in the seventh inning, and the Saints put together another mini rally in the ninth to spoil near-perfect numbers for Waechter.

Meanwhile, the WOU offense provided plenty of support as the Wolves pounded out 13 hits. Richard O'Neill (So., Edmonds, WA) had two of SMU's five hits in the first game.

In the second contest, WOU broke open a 2-2 game with two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

The Wolves were in double digits again with 11 hits, while the Saints tallied four hits. Curtis Thibault (Jr., Cashmere, WA) and Ezzard Wilkins (So., Lacey, WA) drove in SMU's two runs.
