Reunion Weekend 2011

Friday, September 23

Coffee with the Campus, 2:30-4 p.m.
Join classmates, faculty and students of Saint Martin's for a casual kick-off to Alumni Weekend. Enjoy conversation and camaraderie at The Monk's Bean lounge in Harned Hall, where coffee and snacks will be "on the house".

Classes Without Quizzes, 4-5 p.m.

A. Let's Vote!
Bridge the divide between politics and mathematics with Carol Overdeep, Ph.D.,  associate professor of mathematics. When voters weigh in to express their preferences, there are many ways of counting the votes-yet Arrow's Impossibility Theorem states that a fair and democratic method for determining election results is a mathematical impossibility. Add up the election facts with Dr. Overdeep-and even participate in a real-time example!

B. Something Old, Something New: When Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue
Dean of Arts and Science Eric Apfelstadt, Ph.D., draws on history and art history, geography and cartography, science, literature and religion to answer a vexing question about Christopher Columbus. Join in the thrill of the chase as he explores 500 year-old mysteries about life, death and the transmission of knowledge in Renaissance Europe.

Welcome Home BBQ, 6-9 p.m.
We're thrilled to have you back on campus-so we're firing up the grills and putting the drinks on ice in your honor! Let the weekend celebration begin with your Saint Martin's friends at this special Welcome Home BBQ.

Watch your Alumni Association leadership at work. Participate in this open forum with fellow Saint Martin's alumni, then top off the morning with breakfast.

A. For God and Glory: The Religion of Sports
From the days of the first Olympic games in the 8th century B.C.E, held in honor of the Greek god, Zeus, to today's athletic events, the sports worlds has had a long and complicated relationship with religion. Join Ian Werrett '96, Ph.D., director of the Spiritual Life Institute and professor of religious studies, for a lively discussion about " God and Glory" in today's athletic world.

B. Everything You Want to Know about College Admissions and Financial Aid but Were Afraid to Ask
Do you have a family member who will be applying for college in the next few years? Let Juan Flores, Ph.D., be your guide! Dr. Flores, Saint Martin's dean of admissions and financial services, will lead a frank discussion about the ins and outs of college admission and financial aid.

Satisfy your appetite and tickle your funny bone at this evening event. On the menu: A gourmet multi-course dinner prepared by Bon Appétit, accompanied by a generous serving of belly laughs!
