Disability support

Saint Martin’s Disability Support Services (DSS) embraces the Benedictine value of hospitality when providing students with disabilities with access to reasonable accommodations, advocacy and academic support services. The DSS office utilizes a respectful, friendly and inclusive approach to working with students in its program and services.

Eligible students

A student with a disability is one who qualifies for a disability under section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and/or the Americans with Disabilities Act. Any student with a documented physical, medical, psychological or learning disability may be eligible for services through DSS. Students with temporary disabilities such as concussions or other injuries may also be served by the DSS office.

Requesting accommodations

  • Eligible students must provide recent medical and/or professional documentation specifying the disability and the recommended accommodations. New students are advised to contact the DSS coordinator following admission to ensure eligibility is established and any needed, reasonable accommodations are evaluated and approved in a timely manner. Accommodations are not retroactive.
  • Eligible students must also set up an intake session with the DSS coordinator. This session helps students elaborate on their needs and gives them a chance to learn about their rights and responsibilities as a student with a disability.

Accommodations

The DSS office assists students with many different types of accommodations. Possible accommodations at Saint Martin’s may include, but are not limited to, note-takers for lectures, exam accommodations such as extended time or a distraction-reduced environment, and course materials in alternate formats.
