Safety and security mission
The Saint Martin's University Office of Public Safety provides a
proactive force of trained personnel to serve and protect the physical
property and the members of Saint Martin's University and its parent
monastic community, Saint Martin's Abbey. Security officers assist with
established crime prevention and awareness programs, provide necessary
public services to assist the University and the visiting public and
regulate traffic and parking. The Office of Public Safety implements and
enforces applicable local, state and federal laws, as well as the rules
and policies of both the University and the monastic community. Campus
Security exists to insure the health and welfare of the community and
provide a safe environment for all faculty, staff and students that will
enhance the quality of the educational experience. Campus security
oversees the policies, procedures and resources necessary to support
academic success.
The goals of campus security are to:
- Provide proactive education, training and support on safety and
security issues to all members of the Saint Martin's community.
- Report any activity that may require intervention from either the
University administration or an enforcement agency. This includes
compiling written reports and documentation as required by
University policies and by local, state and federal regulations and
laws.
- Assist all members and guests of the Saint Martin's Community
whenever possible.
To fulfill its mission and meet its intended goals, the Office of Public
Safety constantly works to provide the safest environment possible. Security
officers patrol the campus on a regular basis noting and reporting safety
and security concerns, everything from inadequate walkway lighting to
incidents of vandalism.
On duty 24 hours a day, security officers are available to assist
community members in a variety of ways including giving safety escorts,
unlocking car doors and jumping vehicle batteries. SMU security has
primary responsibility for enforcement of University rules, regulations,
and policy, applicable local, state, and federal laws, and enjoys a
close working relationship with local police and fire services as
provided by the City of Lacey and Thurston County.
The office seeks to support all aspects of the Saint Martin's
academic mission and to provide prompt, fair and compassionate
application of all rules, regulations and guidelines equally, without
prejudice or preference.
