First-Year programs for success: The below are optional programs designed to enhance student success as they transition to SMU. Students are encouraged to choose a program that fits their interest area for a transformational experience.

What is advising and registration (A&R)?
A&R combines math and English placement tests, one on one advising, and registering for classes into an exciting two-day program. You will have the opportunity to connect with faculty and staff while also getting to enjoy events such as laser tag and an ice cream social with other new students. Since you have the option of spending the night on campus, be sure to bring bedding for a twin bed or sleeping bag, pillow, a towel, and toiletries.

What is alternative advising?
Students are strongly encouraged to attend an advising and registration session on campus. If you are unable to attend one of the advising and registration sessions, alternative advising options may be requested. Requests for alternative advising will be reviewed and students notified of the decision shortly thereafter. Approved students will then be contacted by Dr. Katherine Porter, director or advising, beginning in early July. Make-up math and English placement exams for these students will be held on August 20 from 12-2pm in Harned Hall 109.

What is Incipio?
Latin for "to begin or become," Incipio is your key to success at Saint Martin's. Incipio is a four-day orientation program designed to fit your needs as a first-year student. The schedule is full of information and fun including a New Student Convocation for students and families followed by a farewell BBQ, lunch at the SMU President's house, a day of service, Coffee House music night, and much more!

Who should attend?
Every new student participates in the orientation programs. Family members and supporters of students are welcome and encouraged to attend events planned specifically to help connect them to the SMU community.

What is AHANA Orientation?
Transitioning into college can present many challenges. AHANA Connections introduces students of color to Saint Martin's University's campus and creates a network of friends and community. The program enhances the first-year experience of students of color by encouraging relationships and involvement across campus.
