First-Year programs for success:
The below are optional programs designed to enhance student success as
they transition to SMU. Students are encouraged to choose a program that
fits their interest area for a transformational experience.
What is advising and registration (A&R)?
A&R combines math and English placement tests, one on one advising, and
registering for classes into an exciting two-day program. You will have
the opportunity to connect with faculty and staff while also getting to
enjoy events such as laser tag and an ice cream social with other new
students. Since you have the option of spending the night on campus, be
sure to bring bedding for a twin bed or sleeping bag, pillow, a towel,
What is alternative advising?
Students are strongly encouraged to attend an advising and registration session on campus.
If you are unable to attend one of the advising and registration sessions, alternative advising options may be requested.
Requests for alternative advising will be reviewed and students notified of the decision shortly thereafter.
Approved students will then be contacted by Dr. Katherine Porter, director or advising, beginning in early July.Make-up math
and English placement exams for these students will be held on August 21 from 12-2pm in Harned Hall 109.
What is Incipio?
Latin for "to begin or become," Incipio is your key to success
at Saint Martin's. Incipio is a four-day orientation program designed to
fit your needs as a first-year student. The schedule is full of
information and fun including a New Student Convocation for students and
families followed by a farewell BBQ, lunch at the SMU President's house, a day
of service, Coffee House music night, and much more!
Who should attend?
Every new student participates in the orientation programs. Family
members and supporters of students are welcome and encouraged to attend
events planned specifically to help connect them to the SMU community.
What is AHANA Orientation?
Transitioning into college can present many challenges.
AHANA Connections introduces students of color to Saint
Martin's University's campus and creates a network of
friends and community. The program enhances the
first-year experience of students of color by
encouraging relationships and involvement across campus.

What is Leap-In Leadership Camp?
Leap-In Leadership Camp is a two-day adventure for 25 incoming
first-year SMU students at Camp Arnold in Eatonville, WA. Participants
will enjoy challenging outdoor exercises, team-building activities, and
opportunities to learn about the Benedictine Leadership Program (BLP) at
Saint Martin's University. Click here for
