What You Get With Your Campus Network Account
  • H: drive = personal storage (200 MB)
    • Open Start ŕ My Computer
    • Right-click on H: drive and select Properties
      to check size
  • P: drive = public storage
  • Printing credit
    • $10.00 Fall and Spring semester;  $4.00 summer
    • Costs 3 cents/8.5x11 BW or 20 cents/8.5x11 color
    • Add money at circulation desk
    • Balances deleted each August

Changing Passwords
  • Passwords expire every 150 days.
    • Network prompts you when change required.
  • Change password in the library or CRC
    • Ctrl + Alt + Delete
    • Choose ‘Change Password’
  • Change your password on the Web
    • http://mail.stmartin.edu/
  • If you forget your password, reference desk staff can reset it for you.
    • You must ask in-person and show identification.

Choosing a Password
  • Pick a password you can remember without writing it down.
  • Passwords must be between 6 and 14 characters.
  • Mix letters, numbers, punctuation, case.
  • Don’t use a word, name, or date.
  • Don’t share your password with anyone.
    • Classmates can be signed on in the library under a generic student account until they get their accounts set up.
    • Guests can be signed on to a guest account.

Logging On for the First Time
  • User Name
    • usually your firstName.lastName
    • example:  james.dean or james.dean@stmartin.edu
  • Initial password = smu + last 4 digits of ID
    • Most freshmen logged on in July and changed passwords

Logging off
  • Start ŕ Log off


  • Remember to log off when you’re done.
    • Protect your files and e-mail account.
    • Don’t leave until the log off is complete.

Microsoft Outlook
  • The campus e-mail program
    • Also Calendar and Tasks
  • Check your email regularly
    • Used for many official
      communications
  • Global Address List = students, faculty, staff
  • 50 MB is available to store e-mail.
    • Save attachments to H: and delete regularly.

  • In dorm or off-campus use Web

      • With XP, use full e-mail address when logging in via Web (james.dean@stmartin.edu)

  • Use IQ.Web to:
    • See your current schedule
    • View your grades and unofficial transcript
    • Register for spring courses (later in the fall)
  • Location:  http://iqweb.stmartin.edu
    • When you change your network password, remember to change your IQ.Web password, too
    • Please do not change your email address in IQ.Web
  • Resetting IQ.Web passwords:

File Storage
  • Save to the H: drive
    • Using the My Documents folder or
    • username on 'stmartin.edu\dfs\smc‘ (H:)
      • Find H: in My Computer
    • Don’t save files to your desktop.
      • Desktop files slow logons.
      • But desktop shortcuts are OK.

  • USB connections for Flash drive
    • Flash drives available at bookstore
    • 256 MB for ~$19, 512 MB for ~$44,
      or 1GB for ~$56
    • Backup  to the H: drive
  • CD burners—all workstations
  • DVD burners
    • Scanner stations (CRC and library’s Multimedia Center)
  • If you use floppies:
    • Backup floppies to the H: drive
    • Label floppy with name/e-mail address
  • Protecting your work is your responsibility

For Students

  • Some software has a fee
  • Available Microsoft products:

  • Pickup software and sign agreement at reference desk
    • Bring your student ID

Microsoft Campus Agreement
For Students
  • Terms of use include:
    • Products may only be on one computer.
      • However, CDs are good for a second installation should you upgrade—hold on to CDs and keys.
    • Graduating students sent permanent “license.”
    • Non-graduating students must remove the software when they leave.

Residential Computing
  • To use the campus network from your dorm:
    • Make sure you have a network cable (Cat 5, not phone) and network card
      • 25’ cable is $10.00 or 14’ is $5 (reference desk)
      • Ethernet adapter card is $20.00 (ITS)
    • You must have current version of McAfee anti-virus software and current Windows updates
      • Free download available during network registration
    • Open Internet Explorer and register via netReg
      • If IE does not take you directly to the registration page, type netReg in the address bar and hit Go.

    • You must have:
      • an active SMU network account
      • current McAfee & Windows updates
        • Free download available during network registration
      • Wireless adapter that supports WPA-PSK

    • Start a new mail message.
    • Click on the “To” button to open the address book.
    • Enter their last name.
