Statistics in reference books (main level)

HA202.A36 Statistical Abstract of the United States (2008)
HN90.P8 G35 The Gallup Poll (2006)

G122.U56a The World Factbook (2006) -- current version online
HM886.E53 Encyclopedia of Violence, Peace, & Conflict (1999)
HV7245.N37b Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics (2003) -- current version online
LB1584.H275 Handbook of Research on Social Studies Teaching and Learning (1991)
QH332.E52 Encyclopedia of Bioethics (2004)

Note that while many these books can point you to relevant statistics, they may be somewhat dated.  If that is the case, look for the original source of the statistics and see if a current report is available.  Use  Fedstats or Google, described below, to search for more recent online statistics.

Statistics on the web

  • Fedstats:  Official statistics from federal agencies
  • OFFSTATS:  Official statistics on the web (University of Auckland Library), organized by subject and county
  • Google:  limit to government sites.
Try limiting to government sites.  To find official statistics on war, try:  war statistics site:gov

Statistics in journal articles

Many scholarly research articles will include tables, graphs, and other statistics, which you may use in your assignment.  (See find an online article or a print article.)

For older articles, find the source of the statistics and see if a current report is available.  Use Fedstats or Google, described above, to search for more recent online statistics.
