Colin Chambers, Intern at the EDC
Sophomore student, Colin Chambers, used his internship with
the Thurston Economic Development Council (EDC) to provide
additional input into what area he wanted as his concentration
in the School of Business. Originally from Steilacoom,
Washington, Colin reported he gained contact with the EDC
through the SMU BA210 Career Management course. "My EDC
experience was wonderful on many levels, meeting new people and
working in a non-profit environment. Internships are very
beneficial because they prepare you for future careers..."
Andrea Detlefsen, Intern at H & R Block
Andrea Detlefsen is an Olympia native and a School of
Business non-traditional student concentrating in management.
When asked why she decided to take an internship, her response
was, "I have to work, so I decided I might as well gain some
credit while being able to pay my bills." Andrea became aware of
the H & R Block internship through and email announcement sent
by Saint Martin's Career Center Director, Ann Adams. After
attending an informational session, Andrea decided tax
preparation was not for her. Talking with H & R Block
representatives, she applied for and accepted a customer service
position. Andrea offers SMU students the following advice: "If
you have been contemplating whether or not to participate in an
internship, just take the plunge and do it!"
Andrea Hopkins, Intern Supervisor at H & R Block
Andrea Hopkins, H & R Block's Westside Office Manager,
received her tax pro training on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.
Andrea has managed the Westside H & R Block office for the past
two years and also served as Andrea Detlefsen's internship
supervisor. The Saint Martin's University Internship Program
Director, Paul Patterson, and Accounting Department Chair, Diane
Bingaman, teamed up in 2012 with Kelly Wise, the area H & R
Block intern supervisor. Interns complete free formal tax
preparation training through H & R Block and work on preparing
tax returns, as well as working in areas such as customer
service. Andrea Hopkins noted how wonderful her experience with
SMU students has been and says, "...I would highly recommend
taking advantage of this promising opportunity for any of your
community leaders/bosses. All Saint Martin's students that have
been in this office have been exceptional." The Westside H & R
Block can be reached at 360-786-1635.
