Community Service Trips Appalachia trip 2004
Campus Ministry makes the effort to do service and to understand situations of poverty beyond the local area in projects such as our trip to Appalachia. For two years, we have taken groups of students to Kentucky to spend a week at the Glen Mary Farm. The Glenmarians are a Catholic order of priests, brothers, and sisters dedicated to ministering to and serving the needs of those suffering from poverty in the rural and southern United States. They have a farm in Kentucky that provides facilities for large groups of college students to stay, volunteer in the local area during the day, and reflect together in the evenings. One day project is to do construction work for a company that uses volunteers to build affordable housing to low– income families. For students from the Pacific Northwest, this is an opportunity to do service, to meet Glenmarian volunteers who are dedicated to this work, to meet students from other colleges around the United States, and to experience some of rural southern culture. Click here to download a pdf file to see who went, where they stayed, what was spiritual about this trip, what was fun about this trip, and what Glenmary is.
