Saint John's Bible Heritage Edition

The Saint John's Bible Heritage Edition is now on display in the O'Grady Library. The Saint John's Bible was commissioned by Saint John's University and Abbey in 1998 and completed in 2011. It is the first handwritten, illuminated Bible created in over 500 years. Saint John's Abbey founded Saint Martin's in 1895, so we have a deep affinity to this project.

The Heritage Edition is a full-size, fine art reproduction of the original seven volumes. Only 299 sets were created, and Saint Martin's is the sole institution in Western Washington to own one. To showcase the volumes, Saint Martin’s commissioned the design and construction of two vitrines from Olympia craftsman David (Dusty) Knobel of Knobel Wood Works. One is in the library's Marcus Lobby, just inside the main entrance, and the other is outside the Mitchell Special Collections. Volumes will be rotated periodically and pages turned on a weekly basis.
