The Belltower’s back!

Dear students, staff, and faculty:

In response to widespread interest in having a student newspaper on campus, a committee made up of students, faculty and staff has spent the last several months planning the relaunch of “The Belltower,” the student paper, in the fall of 2008. Members of the Belltower Committee have put serious time, care, and energy into researching what will be needed for a sustainable and viable paper on campus.

Here’s what the committee has accomplished so far:

  • Proposed a plan for a newspaper that will be open to all students university-wide and will not be part of a class. (Students enrolled in journalism courses, however, are encouraged to submit stories to the Student Editor-in-Chief).
  • Developed a clear and well-defined structure for the paper.
  • Requested funding from the administration; the request has been approved.
  • Requested funding from ASSMU; the request has been approved.
  • Addressed planning details for the paper’s staff, advisor, and news room needs.

Here’s what the committee is doing now:

  • Hiring student staff for the Belltower! The committee is now accepting student applications for key editor, writer, and photographer positions. Applications due Wednesday, March 12 by 5:00.
  • Reimbursing student staff Editor-in-Chief: $1,500. News, Features, and Opinion Editor: $1,500. Photo and Layout Editor and News Circulation: $585 + internship credit. Advertising Editor and Business Manager: $ 765 + internship credit. Writers, photographers, and ad consultants: $7.00 a story, photo, or ad.
  • To apply, pick up and return applications to the TUB or the Information Center, OM 247. You may also download applications below and email them to belltower@stmartin.edu

Thank you so much and we look forward to having a student newspaper on campus that addresses and represents student concerns. Should you have any questions, please contact Dr. Nathalie Kuroiwa-Lewis at NKuroiwaLewis@stmartin.edu.

Respectfully, Professor Nathalie Kuroiwa-Lewis and Professor Les Bailey

On behalf of the entire committee (Professor Jeff Birkenstein, Sarah Clemons, Jennifer Fellinger, Whitney Kippes, Abigail Williamson, Carl Lew and Melanie Richardson)
