Women’s Soccer: Saints end season with tie
November 3, 2007
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s had to settle for a 1-1
tie against Western Oregon in their final match of the 2007 season
Saturday afternoon at the Regional Athletic Complex.
Kayci Donatelli chipped one over the WOU keeper’s
head to score the Saints’ only goal in the 79th minute. Ashley Biral
earned the assist.
With just six seconds left in regulation Stephani
Catt, on an assist from Cori Young, slipped past the defender and got
off a shot around Saints’ keeper Michelle Donachie to tie the game and
send it into overtime.
“The final game of the season ending in a 1-1 tie is
probably best summed up in the line that coaches usually get about the
game being the best teacher," said head coach Rob Walker. "I think we
learned from a coaching point of view that we have to be more
instructive and teach them how to solve a win away. We were sitting on a
one goal lead and I really felt like we had the game won with under a
minute to go."
Saint Martin’s got off five shots in the two
overtime periods but was unable to connect for a goal. They had a
total11 shots in the match while the Wolves sent 14 toward the SMU goal
where keepers Breanna Klasen and Michelle Donachie combined for six
saves, three each.
"There were a lot of solid performances today.
At halftime we were able to make adjustments but to make the game you
have to play two halves not just one. I really thought we deserved the
win. All credit to Western Oregon for fighting all the way through and
finding a way to equalize,” added Walker.
