Women’s Soccer: Nationally ranked Falcons down Saints
October 13, 2007
Seattle, WA – Number two nationally ranked Seattle
Pacific University maintained their perfect record with a 3-0 win over
Saint Martin’s in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match Saturday
night at Interbay Stadium.
SPU collected their first goal in the 19th minute as
Claire Grubbs sent a header into the net off a cross from Katie Taylor.
The score would remain 1-0 through the first half. Just prior to
intermission, SMU had a chance to equalize. Julianna Sackeyfio ripped a
hard shot at keeper Maddie Dickinson from 20 yards. Dickinson batted the
ball down and out to a Falcon defender for her only save of the game.
Falcon midfielder Kara Hamby picked up a goal and an
assist in the game. Her goal came at the 71:11 mark off a penalty kick.
She would assist Shannon Oakes just three minutes later. Oakes cut back
to beat a Saints’ defender sending the ball past the left post.
“SPU has so much quality that it’s just fun to watch
them play but tonight I had fun watching us play. I think it’s not just
about battling but the kids are trying to organize and figure things
out. They are trying to address all the things we’ve worked on this
season. The margin seems pretty wide but the result for us is fairly
profound,” said head coach Rob Walker.
Seattle Pacific posted 20 shots to SMU’s two and
earned 10 corner kicks to the Saints one. Breanna Klasen had a total of
12 saves in the goal for the Saints.
“Seattle Pacific had a hard time breaking us down.
They are a solid team and could have probably had more goals here or
there but we did a really good job. We had several attacking
opportunities and a couple of goal scoring opportunities against a
quality side which is very good,” added Walker.
The Saints next game will be at home against Montana
State Billings on October 19th.
