Women’s Soccer: Saints fall to nationally ranked Falcons

September 19, 2007

Lacey, WA – Seattle Pacific University, ranked sixth in the nation, beat Saint Martin’s 4-2 in a conference game Wednesday afternoon at the Regional Athletic Complex.

The Falcons picked up their first goal in the 11th minute from Sarah Martinez with an assist by Meredith Teague. Teague picked up another assist as she crossed it to Janae Godoy who sent it into the Saints’ goal in the 20th minute. Seattle Pacific would score again before the break to put them up 3-0.

The Saints answered back in the second half with a goal by Trisha Halvorson, her third of the season, which deflected off the far post at 65:10. SPU’s Jocelyn Charette added an insurance goal for the Falcons just 20 seconds later.

Ashley Biral picked up her third goal of the season in the 87th minute on an assist from Jessica Wilson. But it wasn’t enough as the Falcons took the win.

“SPU’s national ranking and regional ranking is definitely evident in everything they do on the field from warm-ups to during the game. They were ever so sharp against us,” said head coach Rob Walker. “Even when we scored in the second half, when the game was probably out of reach, their response was to score one more, which is always the sign of a good team.”

Seattle Pacific outshot the Saints 27-4 on the day with 20 coming in the first half. Breanna Klasen picked up 12 saves for Saint Martin’s in the goal.

“The bright moment for us was Kayci Donatelli, Jessica Wilson, and Trisha Halvorson all had big games for us. Cayla Dixon got in and fought her heart out in the back and Breanna Klasen had a solid game in goal. All combined added up to excellent effort. Though the score wasn’t what we wanted it’s a nice reflection of all their hard work and effort,” added Walker.

The Saints’ next game will be this Saturday as they take on Northwest Nazarene University at 12pm at the RAC.
