Women’s Basketball: Saints win in final seconds
March 1, 2008
Lacey, WA – Dara Zack hit a jumper with three
seconds to go to power Saint Martin’s to a 53-52 victory over Seattle
University in their final home game of the season Saturday night at the
SMU Pavilion.
Seattle held on to a five point lead with 1:17 to
play but a layup by Kassie Ludeman cut it to three. After stopping the
Redhawks on their next possession SMU brought it back down the court and
pulled within one, 51-52, on a layup by Jamey Gelhar.
Forced to foul, SMU sent Seattle’s Jackie Thomas to
the line. Thomas missed the front end of a one-and-one and Zack got the
rebound. Saint Martin’s called a timeout with nine seconds on the clock
to set up the game winning play.
The Redhawks got off a desperation shot in the final
second but it was no good as the Saints earned the win.
“It was a really gutsy effort by the whole team. We
came out strong in the second half and did a great job rebounding,” said
Zack. “Michelle (Short) did a great job on defense, holding their best
scorer to just two points. We stayed tough all the way to the end.”
Zack recorded her third double-double of the season
leading the Saints with 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Ludeman
added 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Sade Smith had 10 points
and added three steals on the night.
“That was the best we’ve played all year; we worked
really well together tonight. Our rebounding was outstanding and it was
a huge part of us winning,” said Jamey Gelhar.
The Saints dominated the boards pulling down 50
rebounds on the night while Seattle only had 27.
“It was awesome to come out and get the win. We took
care of business and did what we needed to do to set us up for next
week,” said Ludeman.
Saint Martin’s finishes out the regular season on
the road with games against Northwest Nazarene and Seattle Pacific.
