Women’s Basketball: Saints cruise past Yellowjackets
February 28, 2008
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s had four players score in
double figures as they routed Montana State Billings 73-45 in Great
Northwest Athletic Conference action Thursday night at the SMU Pavilion.
Sade Smith led the way with 14 points for the Saints
and pulled down nine rebounds with five steals and four assists.
The Saints took control of the game early on
establishing a double digit lead and holding the Yellowjackets to just
24.1 percent from the field in the first half giving them a 34-19 lead
going into the break.
SMU continued to build on their lead in the second
half and Billings was never able to get within less then 10.
“We played good team ball. We had a lot of assists
which is something we’ve been trying to do; everybody put in a lot of
effort tonight,” said Smith. “What I love about our team is that we
don’t rely on one single person to score; it can be anybody at anytime.”
Jamey Gelhar added 12 points for the Saints while
Michelle Short and Roni Jo Mielke had 10 apiece. Short also had three
assists and two steals.
The Yellowjackets outrebounded the Saints 44-40 but
committed 23 turnovers to Saint Martin’s eight.
“This was a really good team effort; everybody
contributed,” said Dara Zack. “We were very mature on offense tonight.”
The Saints, who improve to 16-8 overall and 9-6 in
the GNAC, will play their final home game of the year this Saturday as
they take on the Redhawks of Seattle University.
