Women’s Basketball: Saints unable to rebound from slow start

Bellingham, WA – Saint Martin’s started out slow, struggling offensively, in the first half and could not recover falling to Western Washington University 68-60 Thursday on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gym.

The contest was close through most of the first half but the Vikings used a 10-2 run to take a 26-15 lead with 2:19 to go in the first half. The Saints shot just 25 percent in the half and Western held a 30-19 advantage at the break.

Western went up by as much as 18 in the second half before the Saints made a late comeback pulling to within five on a layup by Sade Smith at the 2:18 mark. The Vikings then scored on two free throws by Amanda Dunbar and a layup by Kristin Schramm to take the 65-56 lead with 47 seconds to go putting the game out of reach for the Saints.

Saint Martin’s was edged out on the boards 34-33 but forced the Vikings into five more turnovers, 18-13.

Krissy Bassett came off the bench to lead the Saints with 15 points while Sade Smith added 13. Dara Zack had eight points, eight rebounds and three assists on the night.

Western Washington was led by Dunbar with 20 points, one of four Vikings in double digits.

The loss drops the Saints to 15-7 overall and 8-5 in the GNAC.

The Saints are on the road again Saturday as they travel to Ellensburg to face Central Washington University.
