Women’s Basketball: Short leads Saints to win in final seconds
January 19, 2008
Fairbanks, AK – Michelle Short hit a clutch three
with 28 seconds left to give Saint Martin’s the 63-61 victory over the
University of Alaska Fairbanks Saturday night in a Great Northwest
Athletic Conference game at the Patty Center.
The Saints jumped out of the gate early in the first
half until the Nanooks took a 19-18 lead with 9:03 left to go. Fairbanks
would then score 12 of the final 14 points in the half to hold on to an
11 point lead going into the break.
UAF was able to maintain a solid lead through most
of the second half but Saint Martin’s battled back. With just over four
minutes to play Short, who scored 13 of the teams last 17 points,
sandwiched two three-pointers around a pair of made free throws by
Krissy Bassett to cut the deficit to three.
Back to back layups by Dara Zack and Short would
give the Saints the 58-57 advantage with 2:14 on the clock. UAF’s Sheena
Brown then hit a jumper but Short would put the Saints back in the lead
by sinking two shots at the line.
With 47 seconds left Kari Reabold made a layup again
giving the home team the slight 61-60 lead. Just 19 seconds later Short
would connect on the three that would put the Saints on top for good.
SMU shot 52 percent from the floor in the second
half after making just nine of their 36 shots in the first.
The Saints got a game high 15 points apiece from
Zack and Short, who scored all 15 in the second half. Jamey Gelhar added
13 points and four assists. Amber Harmon and Kassie Ludeman pulled down
seven boards each on the night.
Saint Martin’s, who improves to 3-2 in conference
and 10-4 overall, will be back at home on Thursday the 24th as they take
on Central Washington.
