Women’s Basketball: Seawolves defeat Saints

January 17, 2008

Anchorage, AK – Strong defense by the Seawolves combined with a cold shooting Saints team was all it took for 9th-ranked Alaska Anchorage to pick up the 63-52 victory over Saint Martin’s Thursday night at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Anchorage built up a nine point lead part way through the first half but the Saints battled back to take a 25-23 lead with 4:50 left. The Seawolves would then sink back-to-back threes to take a four point advantage into halftime.

The Seawolves opened the second half with a three by Danielle Dekel to go ahead by seven. A jumper by Krissy Bassett at the 11:43 mark would put Saint Martin’s within six but that was as close as they would get. UAA went up by as much as 12 before posting the 63-52 final.

UAA edged out the Saints on the boards 38-35 and committed one less turnover, 15-16.

Jamey Gelhar led the Saints with 13 points going 8 of 8 from the free throw line. Dara Zack added 10 points while Sade Smith pulled down seven rebounds.

Anchorage’s Rebecca Kielpinski posted a game high 15 points and seven rebounds.

The Saints finish up their stint in Alaska with a game on Saturday when they take on the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
