Women’s Basketball: Strong second half carries Saints to victory

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s had four players in
double figures and used solid shooting in the second half to rout
Western Oregon, 82-63, Saturday night in Great Northwest Athletic
Conference action at the SMU Pavilion.
Sade Smith posted a game high 19 points and had
three steals while Dara Zack added 12 points on the night with two
assists and two steals. Jamey Gelhar and Krissy Basset had 11 points and
six rebounds each for the Saints.
Western Oregon took an 11 point lead in the first
half going up 25-14 with 9:23 on the clock. SMU battled back putting
together a 21-7 run to finish out the half and took a 35-32 lead into
the break. They wouldn’t surrender their position the rest of the way.
“We definitely picked up the intensity,” said Smith.
“We took pride in what we were doing and put it on each other to get the
job done.”
The second half was all Saints, who shot 60.6
percent in the half, as they held the Wolves scoreless for over five
minutes and built a 16 point lead. They would go ahead by as much as 22
with under five minutes to play.
“With our deep bench we were able to outrun them in
the second half. They fatigued and we kept playing really hard and
really smart,” said Zack.
Western Oregon, who was lead by Katie Torland with
16 points, shot just 27.6 percent in the second half going 8 for 29 from
the field. The Wolves also committed a total of 29 turnovers in the
game.
The Saints are on the road next week as they head
north to take on Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Fairbanks.
