Women’s Basketball: Saints defeat Lutes
December
18, 2007
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s used a solid defense on
their way to a 56-37 victory over Pacific Lutheran University Tuesday
night at the SMU Pavilion.
The Lutes scored the first two points of the game at
the 18:47 mark but were then held scoreless for the next eight minutes
not making another basket until there were just over 10 minutes left in
the half as the Saints built a 10 point lead. PLU would pull within
three but Saint Martin’s held on taking an 11 point advantage into the
break.
With 18 minutes left on the clock Pacific Lutheran
cut the lead to nine but that was the last time they would see a
single-digit deficit as the Saints added to their point total to take
the win.
“We played a really good defensive game tonight.
Even though our shooting game wasn’t exactly where we’d like it to be it
was good to see us step it up defensively,” said Jamey Gelhar.
Gelhar led the Saints with 12 points and seven
rebounds. Krissy Bassett added 11 points while Michelle Short had eight
points and three steals.
SMU out-rebounded the Lutes 46-39 and forced a total
of 21 PLU turnovers.
“We are definitely building our confidence; it’s
nice to know we are coming together as a team. But although our record
is what it is we know that we can’t let up and we have to keep pushing
ourselves,” added Gelhar.
The Saints head to Western Oregon on Thursday to
take part in the GNAC-CCAA Challenge where they will face Humboldt State
University and Cal Poly Pomona.
