Women’s Basketball: Saints unable to catch Wildcats

Ellensburg, WA – Central Washington took the early
lead and was able to hold off Saint Martin’s in a 56-54 win Thursday
night at the Nicholson Pavilion.
The Wildcats led from start to finish, scoring the
five points of the game. They maintained that lead throughout most of
the half until Central’s Laura Wright hit a layup with eight seconds
left to go to send the Saints into halftime down by seven.
The Saints cut into the Wildcats lead scoring the
first four points of the second half before the Wildcats went up 33-24
with 14:16 left to go. SMU battled their way back to within two only to
see the Wildcats regain their nine point advantage. With 1:37 on the
clock, down 55-50, Amber Harmon sank two free throws and Jamey Gelhar
hit a layup to put the Saints within one. CWU’s Ashley Fenimore made the
second of two free throws to put Central up 56-54. The Saints missed a
last second shot giving the Wildcats the win.
The Saints were within two a total of 10 times
throughout game but just couldn’t get take the lead.
Gelhar posted a game high 17 points for the Saints,
going 9-10 from the line. Whitney Golob had 11 points and seven
rebounds.
Elyse Mengarelli had 17 points for the Wildcats
while Hanna Hull added 13. Wright and Fenimore had 11 and 10 points
respectively.
The Saints play their final road game of the year
this Saturday at Seattle University.
