Women’s Basketball: Saints defeat Crusaders

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s women’s basketball
defeated Northwest Nazarene University 73-67 Saturday night at the SMU
Pavilion.
The game stayed close the first half with neither
team going ahead by more then six points. Necia Jerome made four free
throws in the final 1:44 of the first half to tie the game and put the
Saints up by three. The Crusaders then hit a jumper and a free throw to
send the game into the break tied 28-28.
The Crusader took the lead in the second half going
up 52-44 with 10:22 left in play. The Saints battled back and took the
lead on a three by Jessi Reome with 4:37 on the clock. They maintained
their led the rest of the way. Jamey Gelhar scored the last eight points
for the Saints, all on free throws.
“Jamey really stepped up at the end and made some
big free throws. Hopefully this is the momentum we needed going into our
next couple games,” said junior forward Kassie Ludeman.
Gelhar posted a game high 21 points and went 14-17
from the line. Jessi Reome put up 11 points on the night. Whitney Golob
pulled down a game high 17 rebounds and added nine points.
NNU was led by Janee Olds who had 20 points. They
also got 10 rebounds from Danielle Dwello.
“It feels good to finally get a win. We’re hoping
this is the start of a winning streak for us,” said Golob. “We’ve had it
the whole time we just haven’t been able to finish games; tonight we
did.”
The Saints took full advantage of their free throws
out shooting the Crusaders at the line 80.6 percent (29-36) to 50
percent (10-20).
The Saints are off this Thursday but are back in
action next Saturday the 17th as they face Western Oregon at home.
