Women’s Basketball: Saints lose tough one at the buzzer
February 8, 2007
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s women’s basketball lost a
heart breaker as Seattle Pacific hit a game winner in the final second
to win 68-66 Thursday night at the SMU Pavilion.
The first half stayed close as neither team was able
to go ahead by more then eight. Tied 25-25 with 48 seconds left in the
half Krissy Bassett hit two free throws to put the Saints back on top
only to see SPU’s Libby Magnuson hit two free throws of her own to tie
the game for the fourth time and put the score even at the half.
The second half was much of the same as the two
teams continued to battle back and forth. With 53 seconds left on the
clock and down by one, 63-62, Jamey Gelhar sank two free throws to put
the Saints up by one. Beth Christensen then hit a layup to give the
Falcons the one point advantage.
The Saints again regained the lead on a jumper by
Amber Harmon with three seconds left. The Falcons called a timeout to
set up one last play. With the clock quickly winding down Christensen
threw up a desperation three that rolled in as time expired giving the
Falcons the win.
The Saints had four players in double figures. Jamey
Gelhar scored 14 points going 4-4 from the free throw line and 2-2 from
the three. Amber Harmon had 12 points and was 5-6 from the line. Jessie
Reome and Whitney Golob both posted 10 points on the night.
The Falcons’ Autumn Fielding had a game high 19
points. Jackie Hollands added 11 points and Kelsey Hill pulled down 10
boards.
The Saints’ next game is this Saturday as they take
on Northwest Nazarene at the SMU Pavilion.
