Women’s Basketball: Saints fall in overtime

Lacey, WA – The Saint Martin’s women’s basketball team came back from a nine point deficit to force Seattle University into overtime but was unable to put anything together in the extra period losing 70-58 Thursday night at the SMU Pavilion.

The game was close throughout the first half but with 5:05 left to go the Redhawks managed to go up by nine. The Saints went into the break down by seven, 33-26.

The Redhawks maintained their lead through much of the second half. The Saints battled their way back and pulled within one on two made free throws by Necia Jerome with 2:47 left in regulation. The Redhawks’ Laina Sobczak hit a layin to give Seattle U. the three point advantage. With just over a minute to go Whitney Golob hit a layin and the free throw to tie the game 57-57 and force overtime.

Seattle scored first in overtime to go ahead by two. Amber Harmon hit one of her two free throws with 2:58 left but the Saints were unable to score the rest of the way. The Redhawks followed with two layups and a three to give them an eight point cushion. They got four free throws in the final 48 seconds to seal the victory.

Jamey Gelhar led the saints with 12 points and went 6-6 from the free throw line. Breanne Lindquist added eight points and seven rebounds. Jessi Reome and Whitney Golob both put up seven points for the Saints with Golob adding eight rebounds.

The Redhawks were led by Cassidy Murillo who had a game high 18 points. Laina Sobczak added 16 and Ashley Brown had 13.

Both teams shot 33.3 percent from the field but the Redhawks hit 41.7 percent of their three-pointers. The Saints committed 23 turnovers and were beat on the boards 47-37.

The Saints next game sends them to Monmouth, OR to take on Western Oregon on January 25th.
