Volleyball: Saints take sting out of Yellowjackets

Lacey, WA – Saints Martin’s defeated regionally
ninth-ranked Montana State Billings in four games, 30-16, 21-30, 30-18,
30-28, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Saturday night at
the SMU Pavilion.
The Saints dominated in game one as they jumped out
to a 12-2 lead. From that point on the Yellowjackets never got within
less then nine with the Saints leading by as much as 15. Saint Martin’s
posted a .402 hitting percentage in the game with just two attack errors
while MSUB was held to just .121 with six attack errors.
Game two stayed close through the first half until
with the score tied 16-16 the Yellowjackets strung together three points
to take the slight advantage. They were able to score nine of the last
12 points holding off the Saints for the win.
Saint Martin’s again took control in game three
building a 13-4 lead. Billings was able to get within six at one point
but the Saints put an end to that extending their lead to as much as 11.
Back to back Kills by Shealun Campisi and a service ace by Kirstyn
Druzianich were all the Saints needed to put the game away.
The fourth and final game went back and forth the
entire way as neither team was willing to relinquish the lead. The
Saints established a five point lead at 18-13 only to see the
Yellowjackets fight their way back. The game was tied a total of 13
times, the final time at 28-28. SMU capitalized on an attack error by
MSUB and then got a kill from Andrea Tarbet for the game point and the
match win. Billings posted a higher attack percentage, .239 to .106, but
had 19 errors in the game.
Campisi led the Saints with 14 kills and 11 digs.
Tarbet added 11 kills on the night. Kimber Simonetti had 14 digs while
Malia Ibarra added 12. As a team the Saints had an attack percentage of
.214. Kanoe Kalalau had 43 assists, nine digs, four aces and three
blocks.
The Saints’ next game will send them to Seattle
Pacific to take on the Falcons Thursday, October 18th.
