Volleyball: Saints lose final two at WWU Tourney

Bellingham, WA – Saint Martin’s fell to Call Poly
Pomona 3-0 and Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-0 to finish up play at the
Western Washington University Invitational Volleyball Tournament
Saturday.
Cal Poly picked up the match win going 30-13, 30-13,
30-25. The Saints were up 4-2 in game one when the Broncos went on a 10
point run which SMU could not recover from.
The Broncos jumped out to an early 8-1 lead in game
two. The Saints were never able to get within less then seven as Pomona
rolled to the easy win.
Game three stayed close until with the Saints down
by two at 24-22, the Broncos scored the next four points to pull away.
They were able to hold off SMU for the win.
Andrea Tarbet had nine digs and six kills for the
Saints. Kanoe Kalalau and Kimber Simonetti each had seven digs.
The Saints wrapped up tournament play against Cal
State Dominguez Hills. The Toros got their first win of the season
30-26, 30-22, and 30-24.
SMU had the lead through most of game one. With the
score 24-20 in the Saints’ favor, the Toros went on a seven point run to
go up by three which Saint Martins could never recover from.
CSUDH pulled away in game two going up 28-16 only to
see the Saints battle back and put together a six point run to make the
score 28-22. It wasn’t enough however, at the Toros held on for the win.
SMU would lead in game three 18-15 when the Toros
scored the next seven points to go ahead. CSUDH never looked back taking
the game 30-24.
Tarbet and Nicole Ostlund led the Saints with 11
kills each. Tarbet also had 11 digs.
The Saints play their first home game Tuesday,
September 4th against Hawaii Hilo.
