Volleyball: Saints triumph over Seawolves to earn first win

September 21, 2006

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s picked up their first win of the season defeating the University of Alaska Anchorage in a three game match Thursday night at the SMU Pavilion. The Saints dominated the Seawolves winning 30-25, 30-20, and 30-24.

“They came out with force, they were highly motivated, each and every one of them. We’ve had some rough matches lately, and the girls have worked extremely hard in practice. We just had to have patience that things would come around and they did,” said head coach Phil Ibarra.

The Saints took the early lead in game one and although the Seawolves clawed their way back to tie it up the Saints never faltered. With the score tied 24-24 SMU capitalized on a service error and attack error by UAA. The Saints followed that up with a kill and service ace, enough to give them the lead and the win.

Game two saw the Saints down early 1-6 but they fought their way with a five point run to tie it up. With the score again tied 10-10 Saint Martin’s got an ace from Andrea Tarbet giving them the 11-10 advantage. SMU never looked back leading the entire rest of the way and winning 30-20.

In game three the Seawolves kept it close at 18-18 but the Saints capitalized on three UAA attack errors to pull away. An Anchorage service error was all that it took to give the Saints a 30-24 game win and their first match win of the season.

“It feels so good. We had a long meeting about being mentally tough and it finally just clicked for us, we found it and maintained it and that’s why we won,” said Shealun Campisi.

Campisi led the Saints with 16 kills and 10 digs on the night. Kristin Anderson added 13 kills and 7 digs of her own while Andrea Tarbet put up 11 kills and 8 digs. Lisa Hall posted 43 set assists and 10 digs.

“We brought it tonight; every single one of us. We came out to win and we knew what we had to do to get there. We stayed tough and we didn’t back down; it feels great!” exclaimed Hall.

“I’m so excited, so happy for the girls and so happy for the coaching staff. That’s what Saints volleyball is all about; we’re one big happy family,” stated Ibarra.

You can see the family in action again Saturday night as the Saints take on the University of Alaska Fairbanks at the SMU Pavilion at 7 p.m.
