Volleyball: Saints come close but are unable to pull out first victory

September 6, 2006

Lacey, WA – The Saint Martin’s volleyball team fell one game short of their first win of the season losing a five game marathon to the Pacific Lutheran Lutes Wednesday night at the SMU Pavilion. Saint Martin’s won the opener 30-26 but dropped games two and three 20-30 and 23-30. The Saints battled their way through game four to pull out the win 41-39 before losing the decisive game five 11-15.

“I’m very proud of them,” said Saints head coach Phil Ibarra. “It all has to happen one step at a time. The girls are feeling the taste of victory on the tip of their tongues; it’s there, they just have to sustain the momentum and learn how to finish. They have to dig from inside and know what it’s like to be winners. There will be a moment when it all just comes to them.”

Shealun Campisi was one of three Saints in double digits with 21 kills and 21 digs. Andrea Tarbet contributed 16 kills and 23 digs and Kristin Anderson added 10 kills and 14 digs. Lisa Hall led the Saints with 52 set assists and added 14 digs of her own. Holly Nilson put up three services aces.

In game one the Saints out hit the Lutes .200 to .071 and cruised to a 30-26 victory. Game two saw the Saints fall behind early, leaving them with a deficit that they were unable to overcome, losing by a margin of 20-30. SMU led game three until an attack error by the Saints allowed PLU to tie it up and propel them to a 23-30 victory.

In a nerve-racking game four the Saints went on a five point run taking a one point lead over the Lutes 27-26. The score went back and forth until Kristin Anderson served up an ace putting the Saints up 40-39. A kill by Andrea Tarbet was all that was needed to lock up a win for the Saints.

Saint Martin’s took an early lead in the deciding game five but Pacific Lutheran powered there way back to go ahead. The Lutes never looked back beating the Saints 11-15.

The match was nothing but positive progression for the Saints. “Tonight was a great accomplishment; everyone contributed,” stated Ibarra. “It’s not the win or the loss; it’s the performance on the court that makes me proud to be a Saint. If you weren’t here tonight, you missed a great match. Thank you to all of the students, faculty and staff who have come out to support us.”
