Volleyball: Saints fall in home opener

September 1, 2006

Lacey, WA (August 31) – Saint Martin’s University was swept by the University of Hawaii Hilo, 30-26, 30-16, 30-19 Thursday night at the SMU Pavilion. Despite having an early lead in all three games that Saint’s were unable to hold on.

“Our inexperience showed,” said head coach Phil Ibarra. “But the freshman really showed their depth, a depth that will be well improved throughout the year.”

Shealun Campisi (Fr., Buckley/White River) led the Saints with 11 kills and 15 digs. Andrea Tarbet (So., Rochester) added seven kills and 13 digs.

The Vulcans were led by Taina Savage with 23 kills and Kahealani Silva who had 28 digs.

The first game started off great for the Saints with a service ace by Shealun Campisi followed by an attack error by the Vulcans. Both sides kept it close. Tied 23-23 Hilo called a timeout. The Vulcans then took the lead on strong kill by Savage followed by two attack errors by the Saints, giving them a lead that they never lost.

Game two saw the Saint’s up 3-1 when the Vulcans went on a roll scoring 8 consecutive points. The Saint’s tried to make a comeback but the second of 11 kills in the game from Hilo’s Taina Savage put an end to the rally. Shealun Campisi posted 6 of her 15 digs in the game.

In game three the Saints took an early lead up 8-2 out of the gate. Hilo began to climb back and took the lead after two attack errors by the Saints. The Vulcans never looked back, going on to win 30-19.

“We have to think positive, be positive and be physically and mentally tough,” said Ibarra. “I have to pat Lisa Hall on the back. She injured her ankle during warm-ups but was able to come in and perform the way she did.”

Hall (Sr., Olympia) played in all three games for the Saints and led the team with 27 set assists adding in two services aces.

“I was very impressed with the young troopers. They showed that they have the ability to perform on the court,” stated Ibarra.
