Volleyball: Bautista honored as All-Conference Selection

November 14, 2005

Saint Martin's University senior libero Kirstin Bautista (University Place, WA) was an honorable mention selection on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball All-Star Team announced on Monday.

Bautista led the Saints in digs (267) and digs per game (3.34). Her per game average was the 13th best mark among conference competition. She also led the team in service aces (29) with a .36 percentage, good enough to finish no. 12 in the GNAC.

Saint Martin’s finished the 2005 season at 1-24 overall and 1-17 in GNAC play.

Central Washington middle blocker LeAnne McGahuey was voted the GNAC Player of the Year. McGahuey, who led the Wildcats to a share of their second consecutive conference title, was a near unanimous choice for the honor, receiving eight of 10 first-place votes in the balloting by the league coaches.

CWU Coach Mario Andaya and Seattle Pacific Coach Chris Johnson tied in the balloting for the Coach-of-the-Year award. Andaya guided the Wildcats to a 22-4 record this season and has a 152-125 record in 10 seasons at his alma mater. He also won the Coach-of-the-Year award last season.

Johnson led the Falcons to a 22-5 record in his rookie season, earning a share of the conference title with CWU and the GNAC's automatic berth in the NCAA Pacific Regional playoffs. Last year, SPU finished with a 15-11 record.

Also winning special awards were Tiana Roma of Western Washington and Lindsey Fryer of Northwest Nazarene who shared GNAC Freshman-of-the-Year honors.

Roma ended the regular-season ranked third in hitting percentage (.328), sixth in blocks (1.06) and 13th in points (3.38), while Fryer finished sixth in points (4.00) and seventh in kills (3.17).
