Volleyball: Saints swept by Seattle University, edged by Grand Canyon

November 1, 2005

Lacey, WA (Oct. 29)---Saint Martin's fell to Seattle University, 22-30, 21-30, 13-30 on Oct. 29 at the Saint Martin's University Pavilion in Lacey.

The Saints kept it close through midway in game one. Seattle led 15-13 before slowly pulling away, eventually putting the game away at 30-22.

The Saints once again kept things close early on in game two, but Seattle served five straight points to turn a 9-9 tie into a 13-9 lead. SU did the same several points later to again increase the lead to 19-13 and four straight points served by Melissa Mulick made the score 23-14. The teams traded points before Seattle took the 30-21 win.

The Redhawks wasted no time jumping out to an 11-3 lead in game three and never looked back, a 30-13 victor.

The Redhawks were charged with only 11 errors in the match - four in the final two games - as they outhit the Saints .354 to .114.

Kirstin Bautista (Sr., University Place, WA) led the Saints with 13 kills, while Keana Morrisey (Sr., University Place, WA) and Randi-Lee Rezents (Sr., Kaneohe, HI) each had 10 digs. Lisa Hall (Jr., Olympia, WA) had 25 assists and hit for a .417 percentage (5 of 12).

Seattle University sensation, Sarah Sommerman, had another huge night for the Redhawks, posting 18 kills with just one hitting error in 30 attempts to hit an outrageous .567 in the match to lead all hitters. Sommerman became just the second player in GNAC history to eclipse the 1,400-career kill mark. She now has 1,401 and has four regular-season matches to get 34 kills and break the GNAC career kills record of 1,434 currently held by Louise Free of Northwest Nazarene.

Speaking of milestones, Seattle University senior Maggie Safranski had 18 digs to increase her career digs total to 1,930 and move into the No. 16 position on the all-time NCAA Division II national career digs list. The 18 digs kept her perfectly on pace to become just the 15th player in NCAA Division II history to reach 2,000 digs in her career. Safranski needs 70 digs in four regular-season matches, or an average of 17.5 per match, to get to 2,000.

Lacey, WA (Oct. 24)---Saint Martin’s was edged by Grand Canyon University, 28-30, 27-30, 30-22, 29-31 on Oct. 24 in a NCAA Division II Pacific Regional volleyball match at SMU Pavilion in Lacey.

Despite the loss, the Saints scored one more total point in the match, but lost a pair of two-point games and a three-point game.

Andrea Tarbet (Fr, Rochester, WA) had 18 kills and Keana Morrisey (Jr., University Place, WA) had 16 for the Saints. SMU also got 17 digs from Kirstin Bautista (Sr., University Place, WA) and 54 assists from Lisa Hall (Jr., Olympia, WA).
