Track and Field: Busy week for Saints

April 18, 2007

Saint Martin’s track and field traveled to California to take part in both the Mt Sac Relays and the Azusa Pacific Invite and came away with strong performances at both.

Friday saw the Saints at the Azusa Pacific Invite where they represented themselves well among international and Division I athletes. Sam Washington made another push to display his prowess throwing the shot 52’6.6” for a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark and ranking him 18th in the nation. The throw was the second longest in GNAC history and set a new school record.

“Sam just keeps going from strength to strength and is very exciting to watch,” said head coach Julie Sullivan.

Other PRs in the meet came from Bryan Gerry in the 200m (23.14), Josh Gatbunton in the 800m (1:57.88), and Mike Vavricka in the discus.

Season’s bests came from Krinda Carlson in the 1500m (4:51.03) and Chelsi Claussen in both the 100m hurdles (15.65) and 400m hurdles (1:06.51).

On Thursday at Mt Sac the Saints had three representatives in the 10k races. In the women’s race Jessie Dunnam and Helen Camden both put forth good times. Dunnam was close to her PR with a time of 39:26.21 while Camden ran a new PR with a time of 39:55.89. Both times were automatic qualifying times for the GNAC Championship Meet.

John Riak also ran the 10k posted a time of 31:19.88.

Also participating this weekend was Jill Blake, who took part in the Western Oregon Twilight Meet. She again set a school record in the hammer eclipsing her old mark and throwing 128’11”. She also earned a season’s best 111’1” in the javelin.

The Saints’ next meet is the Western Washington Twilight Meet in Bellingham on April 25th.
