Track and Field: Saints post solid outing at PLU

Parkland, WA – Saint Martin’s posted their strongest showing of the season at the Pacific Lutheran University Invitational as they came away with four new school records, one record equaled, seven wins, 11 personal records and five season’s best.

Sam Washington led the way with two wins and two school records. Washington took first in the shot with a GNAC season-best throw of 50’8” becoming the seventh athlete in GNAC history to surpass the 50 foot mark. He then smashed his own record and PR by 14 feet in the discus with a throw of 143’6”.

In the hammer throw Jill Blake set a school record and PR of 125’11”. The Saints’ fourth school record and third win of the day came from Annie Laweryson in the 800m. Laweryson, who led for all but 200m of the race, finished with a time of 2:19.34.

Bill Richardson equaled the school record in the high jump with a season’s best 6’8”.

The Saints got wins from John Riak in the 10,000m in 33:12.97, Krinda Carlson in the 1500m with a season’s best 4:54.60, Chelsi Claussen in the 400m with a season best of 58.88, and the women’s 1600m relay team of Jessica Pendon, Amy Layton, Laweryson, and Claussen who took first with a season’s best time of 4:12.37.

Bryan Gerry set new PRs in the 400m (50.53) and 200m (23.30). Michael Grosso also set a new PR in the 400m (58.74) while Steven La Londe picked one up in the 1500m (4:27.75).

Other personal records were Michael Vavricka in the hammer (111’10”) and Jacob Loquvam in the discus (95’8”). Jessie Dunnam and Jessica Pendon also set PRs in the 1500m (5:00.39) and 400m (59.89) respectively.

Rounding out the Saints’ season bests were Layton and Claussen. Layton finished the 800m in 2:25.21 while Claussen ran the 200m in 26.49.

Selected athletes will now travel to California to take part in the Mt Sac Relays and the Azusa Pacific Invitational April 17th and 18th.
