Track and Field: More records fall for Saints

Lacey, WA – It was another busy weekend for the Saint Martin’s track and field team as they split up to take part in both the Willamette Invitational and the UPS Shotwell Invitational.

The Saints picked up two more school records along with two wins at the Shotwell Invitational on Saturday.

Sam Washington accounted for one win and both school records. He extended his lead at the top of the GNAC in the shot with a throw of 49’6 ½” to earn the victory and defeating UPS senior AJ Middleton who was undefeated at home.

Washington’s second school record came in the hammer as he extended the record by 5’3” with a throw of 119’4”.

Annie Laweryson picked up the Saints’ other win of the day in the women’s 800m. With 200m to go Laweryson hit the front and never looked back to win by 1.5 seconds in a time of 2:20.85.

Mike Vavricka increased his PR in the shot with a throw of 41’8” to earn a GNAC provisional qualifying time. Bryan Gerry, who also notched a provisional qualifying time, had his best collegiate meet to date setting a PR of 51.68 in the 400m.

Saint Martin’s got four other provisional qualifying marks from Bill Richardson in the men’s high jump (6’3.25”), Krinda Carlson (2:23.38) and Amy Layton (2:25.16) in the 800m, and Jessie Dunnam in the 5000m (19.21.47).

In Friday’s Willamette Invitational John Riak finished second in the men’s 10k with a GNAC leading time of 31:12.77. Steven LaLonde slashed almost 30 seconds off of his PR to post a time of 34:45.42, also a provisional qualifying time.

The Saints’ next meet will be April 12th as they take part in the PLU Invitational.
