Track: Saints make final push for GNAC Meet

February 8, 2008

Seattle, WA – Saint Martin’s indoor track team put forth an excellent performance at the Moonlight Qualifying meet Thursday night at the UW Dempsey Indoor Facility. This was the last chance for athletes to qualify for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship Meet. To be eligible for the championship meet, athletes have to be ranked in the top 12 of their event within the conference.

On the women’s side, Megan Thomas broke the school record for the third time this indoor season, throwing the shot-put 35’01.75” which was good enough to finish in 3rd at the meet and move her to 8th overall in conference. Chelsi Claussen jumped into the qualifying top 12 in two events, the 60m hurdles and the 200m dash. In the hurdles, Claussen finished 2nd and posted a time of 9.55 seconds, while she placed fourth with a time of 27.00 seconds in the 200m, both of which were good enough to place her at 3rd and 7th in conference, respectively.

The 800m dash had Annie Laweryson snatching her first collegiate victory, pulling a time of 2:20.69, just 0.60 seconds off the school record. Krinda Carlson (2:22.62) and Jessie Dunnam (2:24.57; PR) finished second and third, giving the Saints a dominating 1-2-3 finish. Laweryson and Carlson rank 8 and 10 in both the 800m and the mile. Showing great promise, Jessica Pendon had a two second PR (1:00.99) in the 400m dash, good enough to push her to 9th in the GNAC.

The men’s team also competed well. Josh Gatbunton placed 4th in a close finish during the 800m dash, posting a time of 2:00.70 and moving him up to 8th in conference. In the 200m dash, Bryan Gerry (23.60) ran an indoor PR, while Steven LaLonde PR’ed yet again in the 3k (9:20.89). Both Gerry and LaLonde are on the bubble for the conference championship and will have to wait and see if their times are enough to push them into the top 12.

The GNAC Championships, held in Nampa, Idaho hosted by Northwest Nazarene University, are on Monday, February 18th.
