Track and Field: Prentice to compete at NCAA Nationals, Riak narrowly
misses cut
February 28, 2006
Teona Perkins of Seattle Pacific will head up a
group of 10 Great Northwest Athletic Conference athletes who will
compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet March 10-11
at Boston, Mass.
Perkins, a junior from Kennewick, is not only the
top seed from the GNAC, but she is also the only athlete to qualify in
two events. She is the No. 2 seed in the high jump with a season-best
mark of 5-8 and is seeded seventh in the 800 meters (2:13.21).
The lone returning All-American is SMU’s Andy
Prentice, who is seeded fourth in the men's 800 (1:51.84). Prentice
placed eighth at last year's national meet.
Riak qualified for nationals by time in the mile but
was seeded 29th and narrowly missed the cut; the cutlines were 4:11.26
in the mile and 14:37.70 in the 5000.
Seattle Pacific and Central Washington will each
send three athletes to Boston. Joining Perkins are miler Mary Moriarty
and pole vaulter Amy Harris.
Representing Central Washington will be Cameron Neel
in the men's shot, Cresap Watson in the high jump and Katie Hummel in
the women's mile. Neel is seeded sixth with a GNAC-record throw of 56-2.
