All-American Saint receives GNAC sportsmanship award June 8, 2005 Saints cross country/track and field star Nathan Carlson, along with three-sport student-athlete Mindy Lindquist of the University of Alaska-Anchorage, have been selected the winner's of the second annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference NCAA Sportsmanship award. Carlson and Lindquist are now finalists for the 2005 NCAA Division II Sportsmanship award, which honors one male and one female athlete from each of the three NCAA divisions who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. Carlson (Sr., Pateros, WA) has been a standout cross country and track & field runner for the Saints. He earned All-American honors this spring by placing eighth in the NCAA Division II national track & field meet in the 1500 meters in a conference record time of 3:50.18 after winning the conference title in a time of 3:53.82. During his career, he is a three-time NCAA national qualifier (twice in the indoor meet), a five-time provisional national qualifier and a three-time conference champion and meet record holder (1500, indoor mile, indoor medley relay). He also has won seven GNAC Academic all-conference awards, two CoSIDA District VIII all-region awards and six U.S .Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Academic All-American awards. “Nathan is an elite athlete who has earned All-American status among many other achievements and has carried himself with humility while being the consummate teammate and friend to all,” Saint Martin’s athletic director Bob Grisham said. “His presence on the team and campus adds to the enhancement of the community by his leadership and heart. He represents everything a student-athlete should be, accomplishing goals in the classroom (3.88 GPA in biology), in competition and as a young man of character.” In addition to his athletic and academic accomplishments, Carson has served a president of SMC’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee and was instrumental in developing community service events and the passage of a student recreation fee to remodel the school’s fitness center. He also established and led a new chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
