Softball: Saints take one from GCU, fall to Dixie

March 29, 2008

Turlock, CA – Saint Martin’s defeated Grand Canyon University 7-2 Saturday afternoon after falling to Dixie State 10-6 earlier in the day at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions.

Krissy Bassett drove in four runs for the Saints with a RBI double in the second and a three run blast to left center in the third. Holly Morris belted her second homer of the day in the second and hit an RBI double to give Saint Martin’s the 6-0 lead.

Grand Canyon was able to get one run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly but the Saints answered back with one run in the fifth as Brandi Klemm singled in a run. The Lopes would plate one more in the seventh but that was all they would get.

Alicia Fuchs picked up her fifth win of the season allowing just four hits and one walk in five innings of work.

Dixie State got on the board early with two runs in the top of the first and added on run in both the second and third innings. The Saints made it 4-3 in the bottom of the third as Morris homered for two runs and Lisa Holombo singled to drive in a run.

The Rebels held a 5-3 advantage going into the final inning but broke it open plating five runs capped off by a two run shot by Haley Schumers to make it 10-3.

SMU would get three back on a two run single by Kristi Sigafoos and a double by Holombo but it wouldn’t be enough.

Sigafoos was 3 for 4 in the game with two RBI and two runs scored. Holombo had two hits and drove in two while Morris went 1 for 2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jamie Herrick was tagged with the loss for her four innings of work.

The Saints will take on Hawaii Pacific again tomorrow in Silver bracket play.
