Softball: Saints swept by Yellowjackets
March 14,
2008
Billings, MT – Saint Martin’s couldn’t muster the
offense that they needed as they fell to Montana State Billings 9-6 and
8-5 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Thursday at Cenex
Field.
Kristine Kaneshiro led off game one with a solo shot
to left center to give the Saints the early lead.
Billings would take the lead in the bottom of the
second on a two run double by Stephanie Gosselin. But the Saints
answered back as Alicia Fuchs homered to left to even things up at two
apiece.
Saint Martin’s would take the 3-2 lead in the fourth
with their third home run of the game off the bat of Kristi Sigafoos.
The Yellowjackets broke things open in the sixth as
they exploded for seven runs. They had six hits including a two-run
triple and a two-run homerun and capitalized on three SMU errors.
SMU had one final shot in the top of the seventh as
they plated three runs on a two RBI double by Holly Morris and a
groundout but couldn’t get any closer.
Fuchs, who threw five innings and gave up six runs,
took the loss.
MSUB got on the board early in game two with three
runs in the first on four hits. But the Saints chipped away with one run
in the second, third and fourth innings, thanks to an RBI double by
Marlaina Irwin, a single by Danni Ballard and a bases loaded walk from
Danny White, to tie it 3-3.
The Yellowjackets answered in the fourth with three
runs on a homerun to left from Shay Oberg for the 6-3 lead.
The Saints pulled to within one in a two-run double
down the left field line by Irwin in the sixth but MSUB tacked on two
more insurance runs in the bottom of the inning.
Brandi Klemm was hit with the loss after throwing
five innings with seven runs on seven hits, three walks and one
strikeout.
The Saints, who fall to 11-17 overall and 3-5 in the
GNAC, are back at home this Friday to take on Seattle University.
