Softball: Saints take game one, can’t hold on in game two

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s earned a split with Simon
Fraser University taking game one 6-2 but falling in the nightcap 7-4 in
non-conference action Friday at the SMU Softball Field.
The Saints got on the board early in the first game
taking a 1-0 lead in the second. They broke the game open in the fifth.
After an RBI single by Danni Ballard and a two-run double by Kristi
Sigafoos SMU went for the squeeze play as Kirstin Davidson bunted to
score Holly Morris from third. Their final run of the inning would come
on a sacrifice fly by Lisa Holombo.
Simon Fraser got their only two runs in the top of
the seventh on a homerun by Jessie Harris.
Jamie Herrick threw a complete game with four walks
and two strikeouts.
The Clan plated two in the top of the first but SMU
quickly answered back with three of their own in the bottom of the
inning on a homer by Morris, her sixth of the season.
Both teams would add one more in the fourth with
Saint Martin’s still holding on to a one run lead.
Saint Martin’s got two quick outs in the top of the
seventh but Simon Fraser sandwiched two doubles around an SMU error then
topped it of with a homerun to take the 7-4 advantage.
Brandi Klemm was tagged with the loss after throwing
an eight hit complete game with five strikeouts.
The Saints are back to conference action tomorrow as
they take on Central Washington in a doubleheader starting at 12pm at
the SMU Softball Field.
