Softball: Saints split with Lutes

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s rallied to comeback in
game two pulling out a 6-5 over Pacific Lutheran in extra innings after
falling 4-1 in game one Saturday at the SMU Softball Field.
With the score tied 1-1 PLU broke game two open with
four runs in the fifth inning on three hits. The Saints answered back
with four of their own in the bottom of the sixth.
Kristi Sigafoos and Kristine Kaneshiro hit back to
back singles and two batters later Alicia Fuchs singled through the left
side to load the bases. Holly Morris then launched it to right center
field to tie the game at 5-5.
The Saints got the winning run four innings later in
the bottom of the 10th on a sacrifice fly by Kaneshiro, who had two hits
and two runs batted.
Marlaina Irwin and Sigafoos had had two hits apiece.
Rachel Wheeler-Hoyt led the Lutes with two hits while Lisa Gilbert had
two RBIs.
Fuchs picked up the win going five and one third
innings giving up one hit and one walk while striking out two.
Pacific Lutheran got two runs in the sixth inning of
the first game to break a 1-1 tie and take a 3-1 lead. They would
manufacture one more run in the top of the seventh on four hits and one
error.
The Saints only run came in a homer to center by
Morris.
Hadley Schmitt pitched a complete game for the Lutes
holding SMU to just four hits and striking out six. Jamie Herrick was
tagged with the loss allowing three earned runs on eight hits and had
three strikeouts.
The Saints are back at home again tomorrow taking on
Lewis and Clark starting at 1pm.
