Softball: Saints drop season opener

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s was held to just seven
hits on the day as they fell 13-4 and 13-1 to Seattle University in a
non-conference doubleheader Sunday at the SMU Softball Field.
Saint Martin’s took the early 3-0 lead in game one
with three runs in the third. They scored on a two RBI single by
Kristine Kaneshiro and picked up the final run on a Redhawk error.
Seattle answered back in the top of the fourth
scoring four then broke the game open in the fifth posting seven runs on
nine hits including a three-run homer by Sandra Hernandez.
The Redhawks were led by second baseman Jane Purdy
with four hits. Heather Hansen had three hits while Katie Petersen added
two and drove in four runs.
SMU got three hits from Alicia Fuchs, and one each
from Holly Morris and Kaneshiro.
Erin Martin threw a complete game to tally her third
win of the year. Jamie Herrick was tagged with the loss in her four
inning effort.
In the nightcap, Kelsey Reynolds gave up just two
hits, walked two and struck out one to pick up the win for Seattle.
SU got four runs in the second and added eight more
in the fourth to take a 12-0 lead.
The Saints got their only run of the game in the
bottom of the fourth. After walks by Danni White and Morris, Brandi
Klemm singled to drive in White. It was the first run surrendered by
Reynolds this season.
Petersen, Jamie Foote, Lauren Berin, and Cassie
Cueto had two hits apiece for the visitors.
The Saints are on the road this week as they take
part in the Schutts Sports Division II Leadoff Classic in Phoenix, AZ.
