Softball: Saints hand Simon Fraser first loss
April 30, 2007
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s got a solid pitching
performance by Tana Lingl and timely hitting to defeat Simon Fraser 4-3
in game two of Monday’s doubleheader. The Saints fell in game one 7-5.
Simon Fraser, who came into today ranked number one
in the NAIA Region I Rankings and third in the NAIA Softball Top 25
Coaches Poll, was 12-0 on the season after picking up the win in game
one.
A two run double by Terra Davenport in the first
gave the Clan the early lead. The Saints got one back in the third on a
sacrifice fly by Holly Morris to score Katee Nauert.
SMU got a big offensive surge in the fourth. With
two outs Sonya Ramos and Tana Lingl hit back-to-back singles followed by
a single by Nauert scoring Ramos. Alicia Fuchs then hit a two-run double
to give the Saints the 4-2 advantage.
Simon Fraser got one back in the top of the next
inning on a solo shot by Melanie Matthews to pull within one but that
was all the damage that would be done as SMU held the Clan scoreless for
the final two innings and handed them their first loss.
Tana Lingl allowed just three earned runs on five
hits while striking out seven on her way to a win. Nauert led the Saints
with two hits, two runs scored and one RBI. Morris, Danni Ballard,
Ramos, Lingl, and Fuchs accounted for one hit each.
In the earlier game, SFU quickly put up six through
the first two innings on six hits including a solo shot by Matthews and
a two run homer by Davenport. They would add one more in the fourth on a
solo home run by Erin McLean.
The Saints rallied posting a five spot in the bottom
of the seventh. Kristi Sigafoos and Nauert led off the inning with base
hits. Fuchs and Marlaina Irwin strung together RBI singles. Two more RBI
singles, one each from Kirstin Davidson and Ramos, and a sacrifice fly
by Ballard would pull the Saints to within two but the deficit was just
too much to overcome.
The Saints will play their final game of the season
this Thursday as the head to Bellingham to take on Western Washington
University.
