Softball: Vikings take two from Saints

April 14, 2007

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s fell just short of a win Saturday against Western Washington University in game one, losing 5-3 in nine innings. The Vikings got the win in the night-cap 14-1.

The Vikings scored first in game one with two in the fourth but the Saints came right back in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own. Ryanne Horton hit a double to left center to score Kirstin Davidson.

In the bottom of the sixth, down 3-1 the Saints struck again. Marlaina Irwin came around to score on a single by Davidson and an error. Davidson then scored on a fielder’s choice by Danni Ballard, tying the game 3-3.

The score would remain the same through the end of regulation and into the ninth. Western got two runs on a double by Liza Teichler and a single by Meghan Flem to take the definitive edge.

Ryanne Horton threw eight and one third innings giving up three earned runs and striking out five. Jackie Quint earned the win for the Vikings throwing all nine innings while striking out 15.

Game two saw the Saints take the early lead picking up one in the bottom of the first. After hitting a single and stealing second, Holly Morris scored on a base hit through the left side by Ballard. But Western answered back in the top of the second with one run then picked up five more in the third on six hits.

In the sixth inning, up 8-1, the Vikings went on another tear posting a six spot. With one out and two on Ashley Osman homered to left. Three batters later Morgan Parkerson sent one over the wall in left center to pick up three more runs for the Vikings.

The Saints were unable to put anything together in the bottom of the inning and the game was called on the mercy rule.

Sarah McEnroe held the Saints to just four hits while striking out four and didn’t walk a batter. Tana Lingl started for the Saints going four and one third innings while Alicia Fuchs threw one and two thirds innings.

Ballard and Morris each had one hit for the Saints and Megan Crager accounted for the other two.

The Saints will host Central Washington University this Thursday in a doubleheader starting at 2pm at the SMU Softball Field.
