Softball – Saints unable to pick up win at Tournament of Champions

Turlock, CA – Saint Martin’s softball went 0-6 at
the Tournament of Champions Presented by Mizuno. They lost to Norte Dame
de Namur 6-0, Humboldt State 8-0, and UC San Diego 11-2 on day one. On
day two they fell 5-2 to CSU Stanislaus and 7-0 to Cal State Monterey
Bay before wrapping up play with a 16-8 loss to San Francisco State on
the final day of play.
The Saints were shutout in game one as Notre Dame de
Namur’s Cierra Keeney allowed only five hits, two by Ryanne Horton. NDNU
was led by Tara Van Meer who was 3-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
The Argonauts got a homer by Amy Paulson.
Game two saw the Saints get hit with another
shutout. Humboldt’s Tracy Motzny held SMU to just two hits in six
innings while walking one and striking out five. The Lumberjacks had 11
hits in the game including five doubles and two triples. Humboldt got
two hits each from Carolyn Cameron, Natalie Galletly and Marissa
Slattery. Kirstin Davidson and Katee Nauert accounted for the lone hits.
In the final game of day one the Saints picked up a
run in the third on a home run by Holly Morris to pull within one, 2-1,
but the Tritons put up a four spot in the bottom of the inning to pull
away. SMU added one in the fourth on a single by Davidson to score Danni
Ballard. San Diego closed the door in the sixth with five runs including
a grand slam by Jenny Maze, ending the game.
In the first game of day two the Saints fell behind
5-0 to host Stanislaus after three. They were able to get two across in
the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by Kristi Sigafoos but
that’s how the score would stay as neither team got a run in the final
two innings. The Warriors outhit the Saints 11-6 on the day, with six of
their hits coming in a four-run third inning.
Monterey Bay’s Jessica Boyle blanked the Saints on
just five hits through seven innings. Morris had two singles for the
Saints while Horton and Sigafoos each added one. Marlaina Irwin had the
Saints only extra base hit with a double in the fifth. Boyle helped
herself with a leadoff homer in the fourth for the Otters. They also got
two hits and two RBI from Marisa Trujillo.
The Saints struck first in the final game of the
tournament getting two in the first on a single by Ballard and a
groundout by Davidson. The Gators would answer with two of their own in
the bottom of the inning and one more in the third. Saint Martin’s
regained the lead with a four spot in the third but SFSU used an 11 run
fourth inning to put the game away and hand the Saints the loss. The
Gators’ Vanessa Rodrigue had two home runs in the game and drove in six
runs. Ballard, Davidson and Sonya Ramos each picked up two RBI for the
Saints with Ballard and Davidson both going 2-3 at the dish.
The Saints will play Northwest Nazarene University
on March 5th in Nampa, ID.
