Men’s Soccer: Saints defeat Eagles
October 23,
2007
Lacey, WA – Chase Franklin led the way with two
goals as Saint Martin’s beat Northwest University 2-1 in non-conference
action Tuesday at the Regional Athletic Complex.
Franklin’s first goal came in the 34th minute as he
sent a thru ball from Vlad Voin into the back post to put the Saints up
1-0. The score would remain unchanged through the break and late into
the second half.
An own goal by the Saints at the 75:44 would tie the
game at one apiece.
With the clock winding down, Voin picked up his
second assist on the day when he used a quick dribble in the right
corner and sent a low cross to Franklin who slotted it into the left
corner for the game winner in the 87th minute.
“Vlad Voin, Chris Laise, and Mat Nelson had very
good performances on the day and were instrumental in getting the win,”
said head coach Rob Walker. “Mat’s play in back was quite strong and he
was good coming forward. Chris was versatile playing along back and was
a strong presence later in game when we moved him to midfield. Vlad’s
quality on ball in setting up the assists and his work on free kicks was
really quite good.”
Saint Martin’s outshot the Eagles 11-8. T.J. Young
picked up three saves in goal for the Saints. Franklin had a total of
four shots on goal in the game.
“We appreciated playing Northwest today. They were a
hard working side who put us under pressure. It was good to see the boys
really try to problem solve and work their way out of tight situations,”
added Walker.
The Saints will play their final game of the season
this Saturday as they head to Bellingham to take on Western Washington
University.
